17 Crore Trees & Counting: How Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare Committee is Greening India
The
Vision Behind the Tree Plantation Drive
Trees
are the cornerstone of living beings and the very source of life. They provide
clean oxygen for breath, shelter and food for birds, animals, and the society
at large. Visually and aesthetically, trees bring refinement and grandeur to
the earth’s green face. The countless benefits and services of a tree warrant
exploiting them forestall climate change, global warming and environmental
degradation. The need of the hour is to plant more trees instead of cutting
them, especially in rural areas being vulnerable as well as exposed for rest of
the country. Keeping these ideals in mind, the proposed Plantation Drive aims
at involving the youth of the society in greening the villages, towns and
cities. Baba Ram
Rahim is In News for doing social works in India.
Plantation
is very important as the population is increasing day by day in India. This is
the one step toward our earth by Baba Ram Rahim and his team.
A
vision story is needed to make the dream of ‘greener future’ a reality. Guided
by that vision, the Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare Committee of Dera Sacha
Sauda is spearheading a massive plantation drive under the banner, “17 Crore
Trees & Counting.” In this vision, 17 Crore trees will be planted at
various places in North, South, East and West India with participation of
volunteers, NGOs and Government agencies. Among them, more than 1.43 crore
trees have already been planted through 16,000 drives.
The
Scale of the Initiative: 17 Crore Trees
Planting
17 crore trees across the expanse of India reads like a tall order — until the
undertaking is traced back to its source. The Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare
Committee greening the nation, one sapling at a time. Time elapsed since August
2015: about eight years, at a pace of seven trees every second. It corresponds
to 17 crore trees and counting. More than 865,000 Green S volunteers, 2,600,000
plant lovers, devotees and environment lovers, in collaboration with the
government of India, are all engaged in various phases of the initiative. The
trees are mostly native, fruit-bearing or have medicinal value.
The
distribution is characteristic of the diversity of India. North India sees the
planting of sandalwood, arjun, jamun, amla, acacia and peepal, with a green
canopy growing across Delhi NCR, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar
Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh under the Committee’s guidance. South India is
home to tamarind and neem, besides traditional varieties such as sapthaparni,
naagalingam, nellikai, vennaikkai and pattanchara, and the green cover extends
over Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Pondicherry. East India witnesses the
growth of sal, shirish, seasamum, sarai, kadamb and rohini, while west India
nurtures mango, chiku, coconut, henn, bari and bauhinia.
Community
Involvement in Tree Plantation
Volunteers
have been engaged with the ‘Plant a Sapling’ initiative since 2008. These
individuals help raise awareness, provide support, and offer guidance on
suitable species for planting. The accompanying photo illustrates an
awareness-raising session conducted at Palakkad, Kerala, India.
Members
of Mitra Sena — a group dedicated to environmental protection — regularly visit
local schools to motivate children to plant and nurture trees. The photograph
depicts Mitra Sena volunteer Arto Dave officiating the opening ceremony at Holy
Angels Central School in Thiruvananthapuram.
Success
Stories from the Ground
The
unfulfilled desires of earlier generations have long been a source of pain.
Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare Committee stands as the main agent of change,
guiding the vision of a prosperous and harmonious society. Starting from humble
beginnings in the Colonel Shyama Green Belt, the Committee has pioneered a
massive ‘‘Tree Plantation Drive’’ across India with a target of 2025 in mind.
To date, more than 17 crore trees have been planted across the country. Native
species and, where appropriate, fruit-bearing and medicinal plants have been
selected for each location. Individuals from all walks of life in the Nation
embrace and celebrate these efforts. This is the vision of Baba Ram
Rahim. Baba Ram
Rahim News for this unique idea to save the earth.
Engagement
is central to the movement. Volunteers in each region undertake activities to
spread awareness of the drive. Local schools are approached to involve their
students. The results thus far are highly encouraging, as reflected in research
studies and participant feedback. Tree planting benefits the environment
through enhanced biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and soil improved
structure; it also positively impacts the economy by creating jobs and
supporting agriculture.
